Fourteen Finished!

I got really excited a couple of weeks ago, reading about people making a goal of Finishing What You Have. I couldn't believe it when I found FOURTEEN pieces of flannel I had picked up here and there, to use for receiving blankets. I love these handmade blankets. I make them forty inches square, and they are really nice for nursing mommies. They are considerably larger than the blankets at the store, so as the baby gets older, the "snatch away" factor is minimized!
Two of these, with a ribbon around them, are my standard baby gift. Several of my friends have asked me to make them for them, too. Thus the buildup of extra fabric.
So I gathered the pieces up from hither and yon, and spent an evening cutting them to size. I hemmed them over the next two nights, and Voila! that's all it took to Finish What I Had. (well, one project out of many.....)
By the way, you'll only see thirteen blankies in the picture. My daughter-in-law already snatched one, and my daughter has staked a claim on two more. Now that I've finished them, we can call them Disappearing Blankets!

What a super idea! My grandmother used to make similar blankets, but she always edged them with the satin blanket binding. What sort of hem do you use -- just a narrow hem? I love your idea of tying two blankets with a ribbon for a baby gift.

Mrs. T,
Yes, I just finish them with a narrow hem. *My* grandma used to finish them with a buttonhole stitch with crochet cotton. I'm probably not patient enough for that :) Tho' sometimes I use one of my fancy cams for my sewing machine--I have a ducky one and a chick one. When I do that, I use contrasting thread color.
[Have you seen the cost of satin blanket binding?]

How lovely. What a precious baby gift, two hand-hemmed, extra large flannel blankets! Congratulations on a job well done.

Actually, I *haven't* seen the cost of satin blanket binding... but I was fortunate enough to inherit my grandmother's sewing machine and many of her notions. There is a whole box of satin blanket binding! But I must say I much prefer the look of your lovely stack of hemmed blankets. They are beautiful. What a treasure for the recipients!

What a lovely gift idea, there is just something about flannel that says peace, comfort and babies.

These are so sweet! I am invited to so many baby showers and am finding the need to keep something of this sort around for a standard gift. I might have to steal this idea or do something similar!;-)
